A Light-Hearted Beginning to Fall
Judith Render, Senior Warden

August was a busy month for all of us with Mass on the Grass & potluck picnic, a congregational meeting, and an outdoor dinner & drumming concert. Happily, I also had a chance to relax with a lovely family vacation. Before we segue into our busy Fall activities, I’d like to extend vacation mode a bit longer with a few haikus, both light-hearted and serious, courtesy of Episcopal Haiku by Sarah Goodyear and Ed Weissman.
The great litany:
saying it is like walking
the great labyrinth.
Pyx, paten, psalter,
chasuble, reredos, alb:
ancient words, now ours.
Passing the peace.
Passing and passing the peace.
It’s social hour.
A little girl drops
her wafer in the wine. She’s
soaking up God’s grace.
Some hymns wander from
note to note, like Israelites
lost in the desert.
Book of Common Prayer
needs a more modern label:
user’s manual.
Our currency is
doubt. Slowly we spend it on
faith. Good investment.
