Saturday Morning at the Park

We have all heard the fears expressed over the years about Causland Memorial Park —the city park next to Christ Church—and how the homeless are littering the park and turning it into a dangerous place to visit. At the same time, there are six churches in Old Town that have a mission to the homeless. These churches provide everything from money for temporary shelter to meals on Sunday afternoons.

It would be wonderful if these churches were to take part in an Adopt-a-Park program to help clean up the park where some homeless folk like to visit. And why couldn’t Christ Church take the lead in that? Cleaning up the park grounds would complement the Fidalgo Island Morning Rotary’s weed & seed gardening program, and the City of Anacortes will happily supply trash bags and grabbers for us. I plan to be at Causland Memorial Park this Saturday, 22 May, at 10:00 AM and search for trash. Others from Christ Church have also volunteered to help and, as of Monday at Noon, at least one other church will have members there.

Pentecost Eve is an opportune time to start a project like this. Pentecost is the day when our story of the Kingdom of God really begins. It is the day when the Holy Spirit drove out all the disciples fears and sent them out to bring the Kingdom that Jesus talked about into full and tangible reality. Being good stewards of the earth is part of that tangible reality, and picking up trash is certainly one of the many duties required in sustaining the Kingdom of God.

May 23, The Day of Pentecost

Pentecost In-Person Service – A Celebration of Renewal

June Cook

On Pentecost Sunday, May 23, the Christ Church sanctuary will be open for limited seating at the 10:30  am service of Holy Eucharist.  Changes in the county pandemic status may require us to cancel, but for now, we’re planning to hold the 10:30 Eucharist every Sunday thereafter in the sanctuary.  These services will also be broadcast live on Facebook.

Church COVID protocols will be in effect.  Masks must be worn anywhere in the building and throughout the service, and social distancing maintained when entering, exiting, approaching the altar for communion, and as arranged by seating.  Please do not move chairs.  All are expected to follow the protocol for entering (seats at the front filled first) and exiting (seats nearest the narthex exit first). A Wellness Supervisor will greet you when you arrive, ask required health questions, and direct you to your seats.

As newly approved by the Governor, there will be a separate vaccination section. Congregants fully vaccinated more than two weeks before the service will be seated in the section toward the front of the sanctuary where we can seat a maximum of 30 people.  There will be five seats, for those not fully vaccinated, at the back of the church near the narthex and appropriately spaced.  Couples may sit together if their reservation specifies.

Per the Governor’s directive, we can only accommodate up to fifty percent of our capacity.  Therefore, reservations are required for May 23 and will continue to be required until further notice.  Contact June (text or phone 360-333-9311, email juneco47@gmail.com) to make a reservation.

To reserve a seat in the vaccination section, you must have your COVID vaccination card already on file.  Proof of vaccination will not be accepted at the door.  Send a copy of your card to June as soon as possible.  You will only have to do this once.  Photocopy your card and place in the mail drop at the parish hall or mail it to June Cook (6938 San Juan Hill Ln, Anacortes 98221).  Or, send it to her in an electronic form that is easily printable.

Bring your own prayer book or service bulletin.  They will not be provided at the service.

Although there will be no congregational singing, Lynne will play a prelude and postlude for us.

Restroom access will be limited, and only in accordance with COVID protocols.  Please plan accordingly.

The Altar Guild flower donation schedule is back up and running.  Notify Val Long if you’d like to honor a specific person or occasion with your floral offering.

Note that the church will only be open for 10:30 Sunday services.  The church sanctuary and the parish hall remain closed for any other gatherings or meetings.  There will be no coffee hour or childcare until further notice.

Contact June if you have questions.  Pentecost promises to be a very meaningful and joyful celebration after our year of separation.  Wear red!

Faith Formation

Our adult and children’s faith formation programs are both on Summer hiatus.

Altar Flowers

Now that we are returning to our beloved sanctuary, we will again have flowers on the altar. You may sign up to give flowers in celebration of a birthday, anniversary, or other special occasion, or in honor or memory of a loved one. We do not have a flower calendar for sign-ups so please contact me with your request and information. Requests will be handled in a first come, first serve manner. I will need your request and information at least one week before the selected Sunday.
Blessings to All,
Val Long, 360-293-6396
