Love and Live the Question

Last week our Ministry Discernment group attended a College for Congregational Development (CCD) class in Port Townsend. One of our trainers used the title “Love the Question” when sharing the steps on his journey into the Episcopal Church from the evangelical church where he had been a member. It was one of his “aha” moments, when he realized that questions were not only accepted by our faith, but were encouraged and valued.

It is the question that is the start to growth. It is the question that brings forth the freedom to allow  ourselves to listen to our souls, along with our God-given reason. And it is the beginning of our journey to reach out and discover the answer. When we acknowledge and act upon our question, we connect with so many resources, opportunities and other people, some who may be searching also.

Our discernment process has allowed us to listen to our questions, as well as to those in our team and take the time and resources to begin the journey to realizing the answer. I am so blessed and grateful to be invited  to “Live the Question” as  Mark Thibodeaux SJ uses in God’s Voice Within (The Ignatian Way to Discover God’s Will), one of several books I have been introduced to, as we challenge ourselves to dig deep to find what God wants for us.

The team, Mark Perschbacher, Melissa  Simonsen, John Okerman, Maggie Collinge, Erin Kohlhaas, and myself, have  been exploring our calling to the journey  so far through a fantastic spiritual discernment “class” with The Reverend Sally Balmer.  Three of us—Melissa, Maggie and I—began our CCD requirement (a two year program); the other three will have the opportunity to begin the program  in the near future. And  we have been introduced to many reading suggestions as we personally continue our search.

I am so enjoying the question(s), exploration, and congregational support as we all move forward on this quest. Whether we are  focusing on a ministry question, a faith question, or a personal question, we are encouraged to not fear that it is wrong to doubt, question or wonder, but rather to embrace the question(s) and live the journey.

Waiting times are growing times
And learning times.
As you quiet your heart,
You enter His peace…
As you sense your weakness,
You receive His strength
As you lay down your will,
You hear His calling.
