Betty Anne McCoy

As we are looking at gifts for our Total Common Ministry team , I think about the stunning poem that Amanda Gorman gave at President Joe Biden’s inauguration. She spoke so eloquently about herself and these times, about the challenges we all face in our divided country. We are divided in so many ways by politics, race, religion, gender, and vaccine choice, to name some, but Amanda honed in on how we can be healed. “There is always light. If only we are brave enough to see it, if only we are brave enough to be it. ” God’s  light is always there for us, Jesus’ light can be seen in his life and stories  and from Him we can be the the light to ourselves and those around us. We must be brave to affirm, see, and be light in these difficult times. There are so many gifts among us, inspiration, communication, caring, leadership, support.

See the light in others, see the gifts  in others and ourselves. They are there.

…the commandment of the Lord is clear and gives light to the eyes.

March 7
Reflection/study on the illumination of the Raising of Lazarus

Lesson Outline

John 11: 17, 20-27, 38-44

Allow the passage to dwell within you. Allow this pondering to invite you into dialogue with God.

*What is the who-what-where-when-how of the illumination?
*Ask God to open the eyes of your heart and enable you to see what God wants you to see. Be open to images, thoughts, impressions, and feelings that come into your awareness.

Reflection Questions:

  • The illumination of Lazarus sets us at the moment of his decision to either stay in the cold tomb or stumble out into the light. What does the decision that Lazarus makes to leave the tomb say to you?
  • Reflect on a time in your life when you answered Jesus’ call to come out into the light of life.
  • Recall a death in your extended family.  How did your faith help you during this time of grief?
  • Where have you experienced life in the midst of death?
  • “I am the resurrection and the Life” is boldly presented in this illumination. Say more…
  • Reflecting on Martha’s comments to Jesus, how do you keep your faith strong when it appears as though your prayers are unanswered? How does Christ give you hope in the face of death or loss?
  • Consolations and Desolations – Where and how is God present, for Lazarus and us? Is there something that separates Lazarus (or us) from God?

In 1998, Saint John’s Abbey and University commissioned renowned calligrapher Donald Jackson to produce a hand-written, hand-illuminated Bible. This work of art unites an ancient Benedictine tradition with the technology and vision of today, illuminating the Word of God for a new millennium.

The illuminations are not illustrations. They are spiritual meditations on a text. It is a very Benedictine approach to the Scriptures.”

Mediocre by Ijeoma Oluo

Please consider reading one or both of these books as part of your Lenten practice.
