Reflection

Diane Canington

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of  the world to be holy and blameless before him in love.  He destined us for adoption as his  children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise  of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.

ephesians 1:3-6

I never imagined how much I needed those words until I was reduced to a wimpy pile of flesh and bones as the result of the record-breaking Northwest heat wave.  One sweltering evening, after putting together what I called dinner, –a tuna sandwich with a handful of Fritos and a glass pf iced tea, I dozed off around 6:30, while sitting on the couch, and didn’t awaken until after midnight.  My mind and clammy body had lost all sense of time and place–, my first ever experience with heat exhaustion.

The following day I received the scriptural readings for July 11th from Marcy.  As I customarily do, I read through all of them, but the Ephesians scripture instantly spoke to me!  As believers, we are all given a fresh start, including all of the blessings bestowed by God and his son:  adoption into his family, unending love, salvation through forgiveness of our sins, and the gift of the Holy Spirit.

This reassurance put everything into perspective.  God was with me during this unpleasant episode; I could call on his strength to help me through my weakness, and be grateful that he took care of my needs.

Thanks be to God!
