A Joyful Noise August 2024

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!

Senior Warden Message

Grace Minton, Senior Warden

Commitment

Commit your way to the Lord: trust in him, and he will act. (Psalm 37:5)

July feels like a “vacation” month because the Bishop’s Committee doesn’t hold its regularly scheduled meeting. However, there has been a great deal of ongoing business this month: financial planning, Buildings and Grounds work, and planning for upcoming events. This is a particularly exciting year with a new Bishop for our Diocese as well as a new Presiding Bishop. We are invited to take part in both events. We can represent Christ Church in person (!) at Bishop Phil’s consecration and ordination on September 14 (at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue) and we can have a “watch party” (at Christ Church) for Presiding Bishop-elect Rowe’s installation on November 2nd at 11a.m. ET (which, of course, translates to 8a.m. here). Taking part in these events will be a wonderful opportunity to show our commitment and support. Please let me or Rev. Courtney or Rev. Eric know of your interest!

This is also the time of year when we start to think about filling positions in next year’s Bishop’s Committee as well as building up the Hospitality Team, Buildings and Grounds Committee, and the Usher Ministry. The Red Door Thrift Shop always welcomes volunteers. We all have gifts to share, gifts to enhance our lovely Total Common Ministry. It is made whole by everyone’s participation!

And finally, I hope you will join us at our annual Mass on the Grass this Sunday.

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances;
for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-19)

Mass on the Grass

Sunday, August 4
10:30 am
Mass on the Grass Holy Eucharist

Christ Church will host their annual outdoor service, Mass on the Grass, on the church grounds.  The Rev. Courtney Jones will preside and will be joined by Pastor Deborah Butler of Celebration Lutheran Church.  In addition, our friends at St. James’ Church, Sedro-Woolley and St. Paul’s Church, Mt. Vernon have been invited.  We will once again be welcoming the Steel Pan Band from Pacific Lutheran University as our musical guests.

Pacific Lutheran University Steel Pan Band

A potluck lunch will follow the service.  Pulled pork sandwiches and beverages will be provided.  We ask that if your last name begins with the letter A-L, please bring a side dish or salad; M-Z, please bring dessert.

Please bring a friend!  All are welcome!
And, lastly, your own folding chair might be handy.

Youth Summer Sailing Opportunity

The Diocese of Olympia is offering a wonderful opportunity for high school youth in the Diocese.

All high school youth in the Diocese of Olympia are invited on a trip of a lifetime aboard the historic schooner, Adventuress. We will spend 4 days/3 nights onboard this 113-foot ship, sailing through the waters of the Puget Sound. Along the way, we will learn about navigation and marine biology (Adventuress is a floating lab!); we’ll search for whales and other wildlife; engage in community-building activities; cook meals together; create music and prayer; and even take turns sailing the ship!
August 28 – 31
$200/person
Scholarships are readily available.

Men’s Group Clothing Project

The Rev. Eric Johnson

Alert reader Dale Ramerman mentioned at a recent Men’s Group meeting that he understands that indigent men are typically in need of underwear.  We confirmed this with Robert Enos at King’s Den Ministries in Anacortes, who states there is always a need for underwear (and socks & coats, later on in the year).

To meet that shortfall, we’ll have a basket placed (perhaps in the narthex) to collect underwear, which we’ll deliver to Robert as the basket fills.

Dawn Jex, Manager of the Red Door Thrift Shop, will also establish  procedures to have needed clothing items delivered to King’s Den Ministries.

August Designated Plate Offering
Christ Church Clergy Discretionary Fund

The plate offering on Sunday, August 18, is designated for the Christ Church Clergy Discretionary Fund .

Generally, our church clergy may use these funds to confidentially assist congregants or others in the community facing an expense or need that they would otherwise be unable to meet, e.g., a medical bill or extraordinary car repair, scholarship for a faith formation program, emergency housing, or other crisis needs.  The clergy maintain the discretionary bank account records confidentially; the operating procedures of Christ Church direct an annual audit by the Wardens.  Presently, the clergy discretionary account receives money through occasional designated donation from congregants, and donations to the church or to individual clergy in conjunction with burial or other sacramental services. Donations in any amount are always welcome.

Donations by check should be made to Christ Church with Clergy Discretionary Fund in the memo line.
Thank you!

Bishop’s Committee Meeting

The Bishop’s Committee meets on Monday, August 19.
5:30 – 7:30 pm
Parish Hall Gathering Room & Zoom.
All are welcome to attend.

The Red Door Thrift Shop

Dawn Jex, Red Door Thrift Shop Manager

The Red Door is a place of stories.

Our foundation from 50 years ago – need for church support, a great idea blossoms and becomes more each year with countless volunteer hours and selfless support and grows into something amazing….

The woman who is at home, providing support for her ailing husband but sends volumes of love and support to the manager whenever she needs it…

The young person heading off to college in the fall whose spirit shines bright like the stars…

The team who consults and supports as best they can, all while dealing with their own individual challenges and hurdles….

The volunteer who survives unspeakable tragedy and yet still finds time to bring in donations….

The volunteers who each bring their own unique twist and invaluable bit of expertise to their shift….

The volunteer who works extra shifts because she sees the need…..

All have their own individual stories. And together we weave a multicolored, rainbow, iridescent tapestry of service and love to make The Red Door glow brightly in our community.

It is amazingly beautiful.
