A Joyful Noise September 2024

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!

Senior Warden Message

Grace Minton, Senior Warden

Serving others

Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. (1 Peter 4:10)

  Grace Minton

The Bishop’s Committee last week discussed a couple of changes that seem to me to reflect part of the wonderful growth of Christ Church.

First, the BC has agreed to include a Young Adult Member (between the ages of 16 and 22). Our intention is to both introduce our younger church members to the “mechanics” of this decision-making part of our TCM and also to encourage a new viewpoint to our discussions. We intend that the Young Adult Members will only serve one-year terms and a member of the Bishop’s Committee will serve as a mentor to the newly elected member. The YAM will be nominated and must be approved at the Annual General Meeting just as the “regular” members are. A Motion to change the Operating Procedures to include the Young Adult Member will be put before the Bishop’s Committee in September. I’m excited about this!

In a second departure from the norm, the BC approved a motion by Deacon Eric that Christ Church host a Christmas concert event led by John Van Deusen, a local, award-winning artist with whom many of you are acquainted. Although tickets will be sold by Mr. Van Deusen, the profits will be donated to the Anacortes Family Center after covering the expenses of the musicians. (This event will be in addition to the lovely annual chamber music concert organized by our organist, Lynne Berg.)

The Bishop’s Committee is such a vital part of Christ Episcopal Church! I pray that as you are encouraged to identify ministries for yourselves you will feel called to be nominated to serve on the Bishop’s Committee.

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances;
for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-19)

The Season of Creation, September 1st through October 4th, is celebrated by Christians around the world as a time for renewing, repairing and restoring our relationship to God, one another, and all of creation. The Episcopal Church joins this international effort for prayer and action for climate justice and an end to environmental racism and ecological destruction. The 2024 theme is To hope and act with Creation. In celebrating the Season, we are invited to consider anew our ecological, economic, and political ways of living. (episcopalchurch.org)

Community Support Committee Meeting

The Rev. Eric Johnson
Chair, Community Support Committee

 The Rev. Eric Johnson

On All Saints Day, 1 November, at 11:00 am, the Community Support Committee will meet to evaluate and rate the grant requests sent to Christ Episcopal Church. The Committee will pass their recommendations to the Bishop’s Committee, which, at their November meeting, will vote to provide funding from the profits made at the Red Door Thrift Shop to charitable agencies in the Skagit Valley.

The Committee cordially invites members of the congregation and Red Door volunteers to:

  • Inform the Committee Chair, Deacon Eric (DeaconEricJ@gmail.com), about any potential grant recipients you believe we should support. We will contact these agencies and instruct them on how to submit their grants by St. Luke’s Day (15 October).

  • Join us on 1 November to help the committee make its recommendations for grant allocations. This will be a hybrid meeting at the Parish Hall and on Zoom.

Red Door Thrift Shop News

      Dawn Jex

Dawn Jex, Red Door Thrift Shop Manager

Well, here we are in Fall again! Boy, that happened fast!

As we move into our “super busy, moving boxes and pricing Christmas stuff” season I just want to thank you for all of your support!

We had a woman and her daughter stop by the shop the other day They were looking for a way to volunteer. This mom is a busy educator and works all year around and yet she and her daughter were looking for some way to contribute. At the end of our conversation, I said “Well, you can always pray for us.”

And then I realized, instead of the last thing I think of, it should probably be the first. So for those of you reading this, if you could just take a moment to say a quick prayer for the staff at the Red Door and all of our volunteers. That we treat every shopper and each other with loving kindness in this season when things get hectic and crazy. That we remember to look at one another with love and patience.

Thank you!
